The temperature is still in the nineties with a million percent humidity here in Texas, but autumn is in the air. It has to be! Every year, I get the feeling that fall will never arrive and just when I think that I cannot take the heat any longer and start to question why I live in this inferno of a state, fall does arrive. Autumn in Texas...to my northern friends, it feels like their summer but I will take temps in the seventies any day! I put together a few pictures of warm and cozy interiors. These rooms make me think of fall. So, grab a pumpkin spice latte and enjoy!

Hello Darlings!!!

I'm baaaack! My time off turned-out to be a little longer than I planned. Nothing wrong, just busy, busy, busy. Can it really be November? The Pearl house has been full of soccer, volleyball, research papers, middle school homework (I am to the point where I need to go back and get a Master's degree to be able to help the minis with their work. School was not this hard back in my day!), friends, family and football! I really do love Fall and all of it's craziness. Hope you all are well and I am glad to be on the blog once again.

Here are a few pics to catch you up on the Pearl household. Stay tuned for pictures of the house in all her fall finery and a belated Halloween post.

Sweet Pea started-off the season by breaking her pinky finger in a mean game of dodge ball. This kept her out of volleyball for four weeks. She was a trooper though and joined back in without missing a step! 

Fisherman played fall soccer. The team did not win district like last year, but it was a fun last season with his school. Next year, he will move on to high school (sniff! sniff!), as our school only goes through eighth grade.

Sport is playing soccer again this fall. It is his FAVORITE sport (what is not to love about hanging-out in the goal), but stay-tuned, he started flag football this past weekend and.... he really likes it!!!

We also celebrated Sport's 9th birthday in October. My baby boy is nine! So hard to believe.

TCU started in the Big 12 this fall with a new stadium, so cool!

Fall Cozy

A cold front arrived last night. Here in the great state of Texas, that means that today's high is going to be 80' instead of 95' and fashionistas will be donning their boots and fall wardrobes. Seriously, if the temp falls below 90', it's fall. I was in J.Crew yesterday, and a gal that just moved here from Michigan (bless her heart) was lamenting that she will never get to wear any of the lovely blazers and sweaters that were on display at the store. She couldn't believe that she actually saw a girl wearing Uggs the other day when the temp fell to a coolish 78'. The sales associate assured her that it will get cooler (she was good). I had to laugh and of course, I butted-in on the conversation and told her that we actually had snow once or twice last winter. I got the laugh then! Well, whatever Fall looks like to you, enjoy it!

I love these rooms. They are curl-up cozy to me and just say "Fall". So, have a good one!

September

Around here it is still 100+ degrees and will be for a while, but September means hope to me. I know that by the end of the month, the sweltering, hot days will be on their way out and cooler weather will slowly work it's way in. Aaahhh. I do love September.

Baby, It's Cold Outside! (sort of)

Brrrr!!! The high yesterday was only 54! That is a cold, fall day around here. Today is only supposed to be in the 60's. I have a tradition that started with my mom when I was growing-up and I have continued it with my family. The first "cold" evening of fall is celebrated with a fine, gourmet dinner of chili and spaghetti. Never heard of it? You are missing out! BUT, before I reveal this special family recipe, I must add a disclaimer: Yes, I know what nutritious, non-processed food is. And no, we don't eat this often. So, indulge in this gooey, yummy comfort dish sometime. It is worth it!

Chili and Spaghetti - this picture says it all! Just cook your spaghetti til it's al dente and transfer drained, cooked pasta to a large pot on medium heat. Add the can of chili and about 1/2 to 3/4 of the loaf of cheese (ok, there is something so wrong about a cheese in a "loaf"). I cube the cheese so that it melts easier. I also add a splash or two of milk and salt and pepper to taste. Just stir-up the creamy goodness until the cheese is melted and dinner is served! I served sugar snap peas and apple slices on the side to make myself feel better. Hey, it made a balanced meal!

The cool, rainy weather has definitely turned my thoughts to cozy evenings with my family curled-up by the fire. The mini-pearls have asked for the "good" kind of hot cocoa. (that means "no packets, mom!"-aka Ghiradelli chocolate with milk, warmed on the stove) In my mind, we are going to spend our evenings like a Norman Rockwell painting. Mr.Pearl is reading the paper in his leather chair, I am needle pointing a project in my chair and the mini-pearls are scattered about at our feet reading classic literature and eating non-microwaved popcorn. The reality: Mr. Pearl and Fisherman watching something on the Outdoor channel, Sport Cort playing Legos or his DSI on the floor and Sweet Pea and I in the other room reading or watching our own show. Oh well, a mom can dream can't she? I do love the fall and winter evenings - picture perfect or not. The early sunsets and cool temperatures, just seem to bring our family together. Although every evening isn't spent by the fire, we do spend more time together and that I treasure. So, I hope you are able to take some time to cozy-up with your family and enjoy the fall, y'all!

An Autumn Table

I am a little pressed for time this week, as Mr. Pearl and I are leaving for Charleston on Thursday, sans mini-pearls - Woohoo! Next week though, I plan to have a treasure trove of goodness, as the Fall Tour of Homes and Gardens is going on in Charleston, and I will be touring! Stay tuned!

This table is one that I designed for the Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi Design Inspirations luncheon last March. The local alumni chapters host this fund-raising event each year and it is always wonderful! My theme for the table was "I suwanee.." and was a tribute to strong, Southern women. The table really had a "fall" feeling, so I hope it will inspire you all as you begin to bring a touch of fall into your homes.

The foundation of the table was a burlap table cloth. I then used brown transfer ware dishes, my Francis I silver, Mason jar glasses, antler sheds, feathers, shells, bird nests, vintage buttons, children's cowboy boots (lovingly worn-in by my husband and my boys as toddlers) crusty architectural fragments and a scattering of "Southern" sayings printed on fans that I placed around the table. I tucked-in a few, delicate ferns and a tiny orchid that was under a cloche. I also used some vintage books, propped open with bits of twine and more vintage silver. For the chairbacks, I hemmed simple rectangles of duck fabric and attached wide, brown ribbon sashes to the sides and then simply painted the monogram on the back. The monogram is one that I have used throughout my home and theses chair covers are now on chairs in my sunroom. The overall look was a casual elegance with a personal touch and close attention to detail. I always like to tuck little details into my tables, so that as everyone is sitting and eating, they will discover something that they hadn't seen before.
