Beach Houses

Caribbean Dreaming

Mumsie (my mom) and Sport Cort and myself drove around Carillon one evening in the golf cart and took pictures of some of our favorite beach houses. Sport Cort really got into it and was trying to set-up each picture to best show-off the house! Do I see a career in his future? Anywho, we started to run out of light, and as I am not a photographer, these are not the best images, but I hope you will be able to overlook that and enjoy a little tour of our corner of paradise!

Sweet Home Alabama- when we drove by this one,
they were listening to Jimmy Buffet and cooking dinner.
We were ready to join them!

All of the homes in Carillon have fun names. We stay in Caribbean Dreaming. A few of our other favorite names are: Barefoot Bungalow, Grits Carleton, Lion in the Sand, Sandcastle Dreams, Au Naturale, Bikini Bottoms, Sweet Serenade, Dream Catcher, Hangin Out and the mini-pearls' fave - Rock Lobster with a guest cottage named Love Shack! There is also Carolina Girl, Four SeaSons, Paradise Found, Captains Quarters, Totally Nuts, Sunny Days, Dolphin Smiles, Cruise Control- they are all so fun! So, here it goes...

Good things come to those who BAIT!

Sweet Pea and one from her catch

Capn' Bucky and Fisherman

The two oldest mini-pearls went with Mr. Pearl and Uncle G on a bay fishing excursion. This has become a tradition with Fisherman, but this was Sweet Pea's first time. We were all a little nervous about how she would fair. She is not a delicate little flower and loves to get down and dirty, but her mood tends to change with the wind and we weren't sure what would happen if she decided she was finished and they were miles from the dock and she couldn't have her way. (all of you with daughters I'm sure can relate) We worried for NOTHING! She was a trooper and had a blast and because of this, so did everyone else!

We have used the same Captain for years - Captain Bucky. He is a crusty, Southern man that grew-upon the coast and has taught Fisherman so much! Fisherman caught his biggest catch to date: a 20 pound Spanish Mackerel. The fish put-up an exciting fight for 20 minutes, and Fisherman was over the moon! They threw back the fish, as they are not great eating, but came home with plenty more and we enjoyed grilled fish for dinner!

I had to include Sport Cort in this post. He was not the least bit disappointed in not going on the fishing trip. He was perfectly content to take his spending money to the souvenier store and purchase his catch - a lively, neon orange jellyfish "lovey" that he christened "Stingy".

Home again,home again- jiggity jog!

Christmas card 2010?

We made it back from Florida - without any major injuries (if you don't count the badly messed-up pedicure from a crab that thought my little tootsie was threatening!), everyone is well-tanned and NOT sunburned and NO TAR BALLS whatsoever! We all had a wonderful week full of family togetherness- Mumsie, Popie, Aunt H and Uncle G were there with us pearls -lots of beach and pool time, heated games of charades, bountiful moonlit crab hunts, a fun bay fishing trip and lots of wildlife encounters - a sea turtle, rays, dolphins, a few jellies and of course crabs!

We were all anxious to see for ourselves the effects of the oil spill to the gulf. All looked OK on the surface and the booms were still in place, but the locals have seen the subtle environmental changes that have occurred, mainly because of the chemical dispersants used to treat the spill. The sea grasses are dying and the delicate creatures that find sanctuary in their midst, as well. The population of the small bait fish has rapidly declined and this is trouble for all of the larger creatures up the food chain! I will get down from my soapbox, but keep the gulf, the people and the wildlife in your prayers. The ocean will heal, but it won't be overnight!

Now that we are home, it is time to prepare for school! Can it really be here already? I have wanted to freeze time lately. It is going too fast! My baby is going into first grade, my girl is going into fourth grade and my oldest is going into sixth grade - sixth grade? That is when I truly discovered music in the midst of Duran Duran's Rio album, I started wearing a little lip gloss and mascara and had my first slow dance to Journey's, Open Arms. All of these thoughts, combined with an upcoming birthday (I will just say that it's a number that rhymes with "Lordy"), and I am feeling a little melancholy. I want more time!!! If I can't make more time, I am going to try and enjoy every precious moment!

So, here are a few precious moments from our vacay. May you enjoy them, too!

Notice the "pirate" necklace he is sporting- sooooo proud of that!
I have NO idea what hand sign is.

Aunt H and Uncle G - aren't they adorable? This is at The Red Bar in Grayton Beach

Where did my baby girl go?
This sweet pic melts my heart!

Beach Week- Something's Gotta Give

photo - Hooked on Houses

Beach Week wouldn't be complete without a post of what must be the quintessential beach house - the home in Something's Gotta Give. The home is it's own character in the movie and it just wouldn't be the same without it. So, put on a turtleneck, pour a glass of wine, turn on some Edith Piaf tunes and ENJOY!

Beach Week Design Crush - Suzanne Kasler

This week, while I am basking on the beach, I thought I would bring a little sun to you all and host a little Beach Week here on the ole blog! We have been journeying to the Florida panhandle for the past eight years and we never grow tired of it! The Tidy-bowl blue-green Gulf water, the sugary-white sand and the comfort of spending time with family makes this vacay one that we never grow tired of!

Atlanta-based designer, Suzanne Kasler, has a vacation home here at Carillon Beach where we rent a home. Maybe, I will catch her while I am here and get a tour! Suzanne is an amazing designer. Her interiors are graciously Southern and traditional, yet fresh, edited and current. These pics will show you why she is one of my "design crushes!"
